Join the Scrap Exchange Team!
Jump right in and come help us set up our sewing machines for our sewing community! The Scrap Exchange hosts many events and classes in our Design Center. We are seeking sewing experts who are interested in volunteering to prepare the machines and studio space for classes and meet ups. Do you love fiddling with sewing machines and getting that bobbin all set and with thread and needle just so? We’d love for you to share your expertise with us!
Interested in a regular volunteer shift? Please tell us about yourself and your interests by completing our volunteer application. We also ask that you attend one of our volunteer orientation sessions. Sessions are held on the third Sunday of every month, but please check below for additional dates.
Our next volunteer orientation session will be held on…
- Sunday, September 18th at 1:30 p.m.
We have a range of volunteer opportunities available.
The Scrap Exchange is a friendly, creative, and fun place to volunteer. We rely on volunteers to help process and organize materials, clean and maintain the store, and generally keep things running smoothly.
We welcome volunteers who can commit to a regular schedule as well as one-time service learning groups. Volunteer projects may include sorting, packaging, merchandising, and organizing materials; greeting customers; and general tidying and cleaning. We are happy to work with volunteers of all ages and abilities, and are also able to accommodate large groups.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started as a volunteer?
The first step is to attend a volunteer orientation. Each session is offered the third Sunday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at The Scrap Exchange (in the Shoppes at Lakewood at 2050 Chapel Hill Road) and will last about 45 minutes. You will learn more about The Scrap Exchange and our volunteer program, and take a tour of our space.
What types of activities will I be doing when I volunteer?
Projects include things like greeting customers, sorting, organizing materials, packaging, merchandising and store displays as well as general cleaning, sweeping, and tidying. And if computers/admin work is your specialty, we have projects for you! Volunteers may specialize in a particular area or help in a more broad sense.
When can I volunteer?
Volunteer shifts are available in two shifts every day, since our store is open 7 days a week.
Sunday – Friday shifts: 11:30am – 2:00pm and 4:30pm – 7:00pm.
Saturday shifts: 11:00am – 2:00pm and 3:00pm – 6:00pm.
What should I do when I arrive for my scheduled shift?
Please sign in at our greeter station inside the store. We will ask you to sign in on your sheet in the volunteer binder (where we track volunteer hours) and you can pick up a name tag. Then you can find one of our assistant managers who will get you started on a project.
Who can volunteer?
Everyone! We have projects with volunteers with special needs, school groups large and small, folks young and less young! (If you are under the age of 14, please ask guardian to accompany you.) We also run a slightly different program for folks needing to complete court-ordered community service. (Please contact us directly if you are seeking to fulfill court-ordered community service.)
I want to volunteer with a group of people. How do I schedule my group?
Please contact our Volunteer Administrator, Cappye Mott at (919) 401-0552 or send her a message at volunteer [at] scrapexchange [dot] org to schedule the date, time and project for your group.
