Greetings
from Our Director
Dear Friends,
I’ve written about the Full Frame film festival before,
one of the awesome spring events that happens here in Durham, and this
year we’re getting some bonus Full Frame with free screenings of
films about sustainability and the environment on the lawn at
American Tobacco. The series is sponsored by Full Frame, Burt’s Bees, American
Tobacco, and Fox 50 and it’s
great that they’re providing this opportunity to the community.
This past Friday I gathered together with my community
under the stars and the Lucky Strike tower (and the baseball-game
fireworks—that woke up all the snoozers, that’s for sure) to watch Waste Land, a film about
Brazilian-born artist Vik
Muniz and his multi-year project to make portraits of the
“catadores” at Jardim Gramacho, the largest landfill in the world on
the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, using materials collected from the
landfill.
The catadores are the people who make a living sifting
through the mountains of trash that comes in every day, picking out
recyclable material and selling it to commodities dealers, and they
are really the stars of the movie.
One of the most memorable scenes for me was the one with
Valter, one of the elder statesmen of the group, when he was talking
about what kind of difference the pickers make in reducing the volume
of materials that are ultimately landfilled. With so much garbage, it
might not seem like anyone can do much. He says that people say, what
difference does it make if a few things are rescued and recycled? What
difference does it make if things are composted. So much is
thrown away. But he says it does matter, there is a difference,
everything that gets taken out of the waste stream makes a difference.
As he says, “Ninety-nine is not one hundred.” One bottle does matter,
everything matters.
Ninety-nine is not one hundred.
It’s great that the series is happening, it was great to
see the film, and some additional Scrap Exchange buzz was generated by
members of our organization’s Facility Committee—Chris Chinchar,
Hannah Peele, and Christine Westfall—who worked with the film
presenters to have them say a few words about The Scrap Exchange prior
to the screening. They also encouraged Scrap supporters to wear green
as a way to raise awareness of us and of an upcoming community art
project inspired by the film that they’re helping to organize. The
planning meeting for the art project will be held at The Scrap Exchange
on July 20th at 7:00pm, and we hope to see all of you who are
interested in art, community, and reuse out here for that.
The movie made me think about our systems of waste and
recovery, the hopefulness of the human spirit, and how art can change
your life. And it felt especially timely with our upcoming show in
August featuring a multi-media exhibition about commodity pickers in
Guatemalan landfills. (See the Green Gallery section below for more
info and don’t miss it!)
For this month’s gallery show, we’re keeping it closer
to home, with our annual Friends and Family exhibit. We’ll have over 50
pieces of art made from reclaimed, reused, or reusable materials in
this open-hanging exhibition.
The opening reception is Friday, July 16 from 6 to 9pm
here in the Green Gallery. Meet the artists and listen to music from
Dick Sloane, one of our great supporters and the recycling guru at
NIEHS, and his lively brass band. (If you’re a fan of all the fabulous
science equipment we get here—beakers and test tubes and all the
other great science stuff you see—be sure to say a big thank you to
Dick.) And enjoy snacks and drinks, including Pabst Blue Ribbon
provided by our friends over at PBR.
With
love and
gratitude,
Ann May Woodward
