April/May 2008
a monthly e-newsletter
Greetings ~
Dear Friends,
It’s time to celebrate Earth Day!
Yes, it’s a cliche but truly,
every day is Earth Day at The Scrap Exchange. Deferring solid
waste through
our collection
and drop-off service, giving people access to materials that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to find,
teaching new skills, and educating community members about the importance
of reuse -- these are the things we do day in and day out to help conserve
resources
and raise awareness of environmental issues.
We’re pleased that the rest of the world sets aside a day in April to
encourage people to think about these things too, and we love participating
in all of the community events that are going on to celebrate this great national
holiday.
This weekend we’ll
be at ten different events, many of them in honor of Earth Day ~ in Durham,
Raleigh, Charlotte, Asheboro, and up north to the Washington DC area courtesy
of the Clean Fairfax Council of Fairfax, Virginia. (See the Outreach Events
section
below for a complete listing of upcoming events we’re participating in.) Folks
will be able to “be
as creative as they can be” using materials that would have gone to a
landfill if we hadn’t picked them up.
In honor of Earth Day, it’s also the time of year where we ask for
financial contributions to help us make ends meet. As you probably
know, we’re a mission-driven, 501(c)(3)
charitable organization, and while we’re fortunate to be able to
cover most of our costs through income generated through outreach programming
and retail sales, we count on support from individuals like you to help keep
our costs low and expand our scope
of services. Any donation is appreciated, and we will happily provide a tax
letter for your records for any donations you make.
To reduce paper waste, we won’t be mailing a solicitation
letter, but we
hope you’ll take this opportunity to mail us a check, call us with
a credit card donation, or make an online donation through Network
for Good. And if you’re not able to donate money right now,
keep reading or check out the Donate
Funding page of our website for some other
easy ways you can help.
We
wouldn’t
be here
without
you,
and, as always,
we
thank
you for
your love and support.
All the best,
Ann May Woodward Executive Director The Scrap Exchange
P.S. ~ Third Friday is here, and the gallery is open from 6-9pm! Come check out Northern High School artists, and our celebrity bartenders! Details below... hope to see you out and about...

Help Support The Scrap Exchange
Here are five easy, low-cost ways you can support your favorite Creative Reuse Center...
1. Drop off your used ink and toner cartridges. The Scrap Exchange will take your used ink and toner cartridges for recycling. Look for the recycling box in the store or ask any retail staff person.
2. Donate your used car to The Scrap Exchange through the Donate-A-Car Program: www.donateacar.com. Donating is easy! You can fill out an online form or call The Scrap Exchange to donate. (Note that The Scrap Exchange is not listed on the organization’s website, but we are registered with them.) Once your information is received, you will be contacted by a licensed towing company to make arrangements for pick up.
3. Designate a donation to The Scrap Exchange when you sell something on eBay: http://www.missionfish.org/.
4. Use the Goodsearch web portal when searching the internet: http://www.goodsearch.com. Once you designate The Scrap Exchange as your charity of choice, any time you search the web using GoodSearch, The Scrap Exchange receives a donation.
5. Sign up for a no-cost financial planning session with David Hellinger, a financial planner with Ameriprise Financial. For every meeting referred through The Scrap Exchange, David will donate $50 to us. If you become a client, Amerprise will match the donation with an additional $50. To find out more or to schedule your complimentary initial meeting, contact David Hellinger at 919.227.3177 or visit www.ameripriseadvisors.com/david.j.hellinger/ . (And a note from our lawyers: Please note that this referral arrangement in no way constitutes an endorsement of Ameriprise Financial or David Hellinger by The Scrap Exchange. The Scrap Exchange assumes no responsibility for any financial decisions that are made based on advice provided by Mr. Hellinger.)

Next Month’s Show
By and By: A Journal Exhibition
Mark Cunningham and Mary Yordy are curating a show of Artist Journals.
Call for Artists!
Here is the call from Mark:
“Do you scribble and scrawl your innermost thoughts along with incessant doodles and painstaking renderings in cheap Wall mart brand bought notebooks? Or do you lovingly transcribe your misunderstood rants alongside every fortune cookie fortune you saved and scotch-taped to your beautifully home made journal you hand picked at a crafts fair? Then By and By: A Journal Exhibition wants you!”
Mark will be collecting the artist’s journals. The deadline for submissions
is May 9th. He is collecting the journals at his home... please call 919-286-7847 to arrange a drop off time. His disclaimer: “I will not be responsible for damage or loss of artwork. This is a labor of love project, but I’m just one dude trying my best and do not want to get on anyone’s bad side, legal or otherwise. Thanks...”
Celebrity Bartenders for the May 16 reception will be internationally known Durham artists Jacob Cooley and Bryant Holsenbeck!

More Scrap Exchange Events!
Marbles Kids MuseumThe Scrap Exchange has partnered with the new kids museum in Raleigh to create The Scrap Exchange Creation Station -- an activity area within one of four new galleries and two outdoor spaces making up this exciting activity center in downtown Raleigh, across from Moore Square and City Market (in the former Exploris building).
The Scrap Exchange Creation Station is a 300 square foot space with huge bins full of Scrap Exchange materials that kids can use to build their own creations. This activity encourages creativity and innovation through fun and exploration. The kids will make something colorful and cool to take home and share with friends and family. It is part of a larger Build It! gallery that focuses on design, architecture, and construction.
For more information about the new museum please visit Marbles Kids Museum.
(A special thanks to Sarah Wolfe at the museum for all of her hard work in bringing things together and making this partnership happen.)
