Tis the season to ramp up the Holiday Spirit and The Scrap Exchange is the place to do it!
We have events, classes, art markets, gallery openings, community happenings, and much more—we are the place to be for a smashing good time!
Here’s what’s in store …
Third Friday Cameron Gallery—Opening this Friday 11/21 from 6 to 9 p. m. Ceramic artist and Durham native Anna Wallace will be exhibiting her work in a show called When I Lose My Grip. This is the fifth and final installation of Anna’s press-molded, screen-printed ceramic wallpaper tiles. From November 21 through November 27, these tiles will hang in the Cameron Gallery. On Friday, November 28, as part of Smashfest, The Scrap Exchange’s Black Friday celebration, Wallace will lead an interactive performance. “Participants will be blindfolded and given a specific place to stand and a tile to hold,” says Wallace, “and each participant will drop his/her tile on the ground in sequence, in an act of purposeful breakage.”
Also on Friday 11/21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., we’ll have our participatory drum-making and drumming experience that we call Junk Jams! Everyone is welcome to come on out and PLAY.
AND we’ll have our usual Third Friday Skill-Share in the Design Center … come and knit, sew, and craft! For those who already know how and those who want to learn. Join the fun!
On Friday 11/28 (Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving) from 4 to 9 p.m., we’ll host our truly unique annual celebration SmashFest—come and break things with us!
We’ll have live music, fire pits, AV Geeks movies, and an interactive performance by Anna Wallace. Everyone is invited to participate in the truly cathartic experience of throwing breakables against a wall. All for a good cause! (This is a great event to bring out-of-town relatives to—come see what makes Durham special.) Sponsored by New Belgium beer. Fun for the whole family!
Craftland! is back … Are you an artist who wants to exhibit and sell your work? Are you a shopper seeking locally made, sustainable products? Do you like to buy directly from artists? This is the place for you!
Craftland is The Scrap Exchange’s annual holiday marketplace where real live artists set up and sell their upcycled, locally and sustainably made products.
Sales tables will be open from 12 to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in November (Durham Art Walk weekend 11/22 and 11/23; 11/29, 11/20) and December (12/6, 12/7, 12/13, 12/14, 12/20, 12/21) as well as for December Third Friday (12/19) and Smashfest (11/28).
And while we’re thinking about holiday shopping, here’s a tip: wrap your gifts in reusable materials like beautiful fabric (we have pieces starting at 75 cents) maps, blueprints, tubes, or tins!
Hope to see you out and about during this holiday season.
With love and gratitude,
Ann May Woodward
