Every April we celebrate another year of life here at The Scrap Exchange. This year is our 24th anniversary!
Since 1991 we have been collecting and re-distributing materials, providing low-cost resources to teachers … and to artists … and to you!
We’ve been educating participants and communities on how to make, innovate and create … exhibiting art and promoting artists … providing green and creative jobs (we had 78 different people get a paycheck from us last year!) … helping others “be as creative as they can be” … and sparking creative communities.
And all of that deserves a great big THANK YOU to YOU for YOUR support and participation. Because without your support, we would not be here!
Participation is one of our core values. Would you like to come out and participate? Here are a few ways:
Open hanging in the Cameron Gallery. This month is our Friends and Family Show, with an opening reception on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. There is still time to bring in your artwork – drop off Tuesday and Wednesday until 6 p.m. … and then come on out on Friday night to see the show.
We’ll have the usual snacks and art, and also live music by the band Tiny House, AND Communecos and Transition Durham will present Solar for North Carolina at 6:30 in the make and take room!
While you’re here, don’t forget to check out the current Artist Spotlight — wonderful bluebird houses painted by artists from RSI-Life Options Artists Co-op with birdhouses provided by SPRING, Inc. (Supportive Persons for Residents in Need of Guardianship). The bluebird houses were built by the Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group.
And more celebrations…
It is Customer Appreciation Week, where we honor everyone who comes to visit! Enjoy refreshments, snacks, and deep discounts. With new materials going out every day, you never know what you will find….
Check out our NEW Scraptique section — this is a special area of the store where you can find premium papers, wood, fabrics … and the new Steam Punk section!
NEW! We have new energy-efficient LED lighting in the Mongo area and in the design center. Thanks to a Duke Energy retrofit program, we had 67 lights swapped out in Mongo, and also added lighting in the Design center and throughout the rest of the Center. The LED lights are BRIGHT, great for retail and for sewing, and we’ve been promised cost savings and energy efficiency for years to come. We are thrilled and we hope you like it too!
Other NEW! ways to participate, now and coming weeks…
Summer camp time is just around the corner! We still have some spots available so check out our the summer camp page on our website for complete details.
Also spring/summer classes … monthly DIY project in the design center … the Yellow Brick road track around our building, come out and walk it every day! … Drive-in movie this summer … Saturday flea market starting in May! … Woodshop/welding studio with membership program … Community Yoga … Summer internships and career development youth training program … and more to come!
Many thanks and hope to see you soon,
The Scrap Exchange
