As I write this, a sense of fun, possibility, and the excitement of plans coming to fruition are all around us here at The Scrap Exchange — it is the FIRST day of summer camp!! And even though it is hot hot HOT, the kids are having fun already!
The camps go for four weeks and this first week is Adventure Builders — the campers will design, build, and play all week, Scrap Exchange style! We are just thrilled to have them here!
Of course this week is Third Friday, and opening in the Cameron Gallery is the show Beauty From Toxicity, upcycled art from Denise Hughes. Check out the show and the artist’s excellent use of bottle caps as the primary medium! The show runs from June 19 to July 11, with an opening reception on Friday, June 19 from 6 to 9 p.m., with our usual refreshments and free art-making. And while you’re here, also be sure to take a look at our Artists’ Spotlight, featuring the work of James Obie.
In addition to our Third Friday gallery opening, on Friday, June 19 we’re honoring our cinematic heritage with a drive-In movie!
We’re setting up an outdoor theater in the paved area on the east side of our building and turning our campus into the Lakewood Drive-In, thanks to a partnership with Tom Whiteside and Durham Cinematheque, and A/V Geeks. Ticket sales begin at 7:30 p.m., with the movies beginning at 9 p.m., and you can walk, or bike, or drive in — your choice. For more information, see our News post. (And note that this is the first of three movie showings, so if you can’t make it this Friday, you can try to get one of the later ones on your calendar.)
Have you been to our Lakewood Flea Market yet on Saturday mornings? You need to come check it out!
If you want to sell, show up early — set-up is from 7 to 8 a.m. (All kinds of products are
welcome — from vintage to handmade to yard-sale items. Sadly, we are unable to allow food products to be sold by market vendors.) If you want to shop, the market runs from 8 a.m. until noon.
We are thrilled to finally have an outdoor market open on Saturdays!
The Yellow Brick Road on the perimeter of our campus is also complete — it is one-eighth of a mile around, or about 300 steps, 8 times around will get you a mile!
In retail news, we are tweaking our store hours for the summer — starting on Monday June 22, we’ll be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Sunday to Friday. Our Saturday hours remain the same — 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Whether you’re doing your own camps, or have a project you’re working on, or want to bring the kids in for some summer fun Make-and-Take — or if you just want to come in to get inspired — we hope to see you soon!
