As our Executive Director Ann Woodward enjoys the final weeks of a two-month sabbatical, I am happy to report on her behalf that The Scrap Exchange remains as busy and creative as ever, thanks to an amazing team of co-workers! Our retail staff, led by Madeline James and Roderick McClain, continues to make improvements to the store and shopping experience. Our outreach staff, led by Lindsey Miller, is wrapping up a busy fall festival season out on the road. Our collections and processing team, led by Daniel Bagnell, gets freshly donated materials picked up, processed and out onto the floor daily. Operations Manager Phoebe Brush works behind the scenes with staff and board members to keep everything running smoothly. Development Manager Jessica Moore has been busy finding new funding opportunities that forge relationships within the community like our Partners in Reuse program. In the Design Center, our teaching team brings their creative energy weekly to a full lineup of classes and community meetups. The action is nonstop, and the creative energy is infectious!
Speaking of creativity, we’ve got a big weekend ahead chock full of art and opportunity. We are so excited about our upcoming Green Gallery exhibit, Haunted Moon, that features paintings and mystical portraits on found wood by Jerris Gibbs. Jerris is a self-taught artist and also a part-time staff member here in the store. Her work in this exhibit explores themes of gender-identity, Appalachian magick and tarot symbolism. Haunted Moon opens on Third Friday, which is appropriately enough, a full moon! An opening reception is scheduled on Friday evening, October 18 from 6-9pm and you are invited to join us for music, refreshments and a chance to meet the artist.
Haunted Moon marks Jerris’ first solo exhibition, and that fact illustrates a big reason why I personally love working here at The Scrap Exchange! Our Green Gallery and Artist Marketplace programming provide emerging artists with multiple opportunities throughout the year to exhibit and sell their work. In fact, we have three Call for Artist opportunities currently in progress, and we encourage any reuse artist in the region to submit their works or proposals. Check out the summaries below and click on the links for more details and deadlines. Then send us your proposals!
Next, if you are looking for amazing bargains on supplies for your creative projects, join us on Saturday, October 19 for our big semi-annual Storewide Sale! The entire store is on sale for one-day only, with savings of 30%-50% off your retail store purchases. Check out the details here on our website. Enjoy huge savings on all your favorite materials in every department including fabric, crafts, paper, office, vintage, audio/visual, electronics, tile, wood and more. It’s ALL on sale October 19. So that’s a quick rundown of what’s happening right now. As we look forward to Ann’s return next month, we also look forward to a full calendar of holiday programming in November and December. And we can’t help but look ahead to even bigger plans in 2014. We have some major projects in the planning stages, and we can’t wait to share details with you once they are firmed up. Stay tuned! And as always, thanks for your love and support. We can’t do this without YOU!
