Friday, June 15, 2018, 6-9:00 pm: Third Friday Gallery Opening, Art Win by Julia Caston
Artist Julia Caston creates trophies for other artists. To win one of Julia’s trophies, one must first self-identify as artist. Next, the artist buys Julia a coffee and participates in a conversation with her. That conversation is where the magic happens. During this brief interaction, Julia forms a vision about how to honor each artist and creates a trophy-sculpture made from upcycled and thrifted materials. To date, Julia has made 55 trophies and Art Win features ten of the most recent trophies which very special artists have won.
Julia Caston is from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. She received her BA in art history from Barnard College and her MFA in visual art from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2017. Her work focuses on themes of generosity, promoting creativity, exchange, and communication. She is a current Regional Emerging Artist in Residence at Artspace and an upcoming Brightwork Fellow at Anchorlight studios in Raleigh.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 15, 2018, from 6-9:00 pm. The evening’s festivities include light snacks and drinks, as well as free art making in the Make and Take room. This event is free and the public is warmly welcomed. The artist will also be hosting a closing reception on Saturday, July 14th from 5-6:30 pm, where the trophies will be presented to each artist.
The show runs June 15- July 14, 2018.
