Laura Nicholson is a lifelong North Carolina resident with memories of the Scrap Exchange dating back to 1995 when the organization was housed in a small booth at Northgate Mall. When Laura first moved to Durham to attend NCSSM, the Scrap Exchange was her creative outlet and a place to buy awesome low cost supplies for school projects. Becoming Director at The Scrap Exchange twenty five years after discovering this magical organization feels like coming full circle.
Laura is passionate about Durham and building a thriving community at Lakewood where everyone feels included. She seeks to build a collaborative network of nonprofits across the Triangle by providing local artists, teachers, and organizations with materials to continue their great work and create a ripple effect of REUSE across our community. Through her work with the Reuse Arts District, Laura is helping to create a national model for sustainable land development without gentrification or displacement.
Laura has a background in Business and Nonprofit Management. She received her MBA from Queens University of Charlotte an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University, and her B.A. in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill. Laura also holds a SHRM Senior Certified Professional HR Credential and has performed nonprofit consulting projects across the state. She specializes in change management, creating high performance teams, and systematic process improvement.
Laura’s hobbies include reading, volunteer work, coaching peewee football, and making jewelry. She’s an avid sports fan and loves to travel and spend time with her family most of all.
